Here’s a gameplay video of Hell Bear 2000.

I posted the with-audio version of the game to Reddit and things went pretty damn well! I was on /r/all at the same time as the president, so we basically met. A post was written about Hell Bear 2000 on the official Unity blog.

The attention generated several hundred dollars for Daniel. Hopefully that’ll keep rolling.

Hell Bear 2000 v0.2 released!
Now with sounds! A somewhat embarrassing amount of them were made with my mouth. The music is by Kevin MacLeod, and fits rather delightfully.
Other additions in v0.2: added a pause menu (escape key) and fixed a bug where bears would stop bleeding if you hit them too much. I know, right? Tragic.

Terrorist Bears from Hell: Day 7

DONE! I’ve decided to name this game Hell Bear 2000: Bearrorists Must Die. A lot got cut, but in the end I’m pretty surprised at how much made it in, given my somewhat slow pace and two days of illness/computer issues. I’m glad I worked on Saturday rather than Friday to finish this. I hope that schedule was hardcore enough for your satisfaction :D. Packaging up and releasing things is proving pretty challenging in my current state.

I stupidly put off sound until the last thing, which is the best way I know of to ensure it doesn’t get done. Hopefully I’ll manage to spend another day this week to update the game with sounds. I’m on the fence as to how much I want to bug folks about the game before that, but here are my 7-day executables, as promised! I hope you enjoy asploding some bears.

Terrorist Bears from Hell: Day 6

I’ve got flying bear punches implemented! Bears change colors and go flying when you hit them with either a punch or a kick. You take on the color (and corresponding combat style) of the last bear you’ve killed. Just like you learned in high school biology.

That took a lot of work, unfortunately. I’ll likely be unable to spend much time on this Friday, but I was planning on going all-day-Saturday on this, any way, so this could still work out in 7ish days.

Terrorist Bears from Hell: Day 5

l got my movement and look animations working today as well as my basic fighting style/weapon switching. It’s important to note that the mullet will only change colors when you are fully charged in either shot gun do or rocket fu. Obviously.

The most important thing I got done was the mullet idle animation. So beautiful.

Two days left! Well, given that I hardly even got started my first day thanks to technical issues, I’ll probably cut myself some slack on that. The plan is for tomorrow to see the actual implementation of shooting and combat, with the last day for little things, like making stuff die and having an actual game happen at some point.

Happy Halloween! A few minutes ago. Dang.

Terrorist Bears from Hell: Day 4


I’ve been fighting off a cold since the weekend and I do believe it’s unfortunately caught up with me here. Weak sauce! I’ve spent some relatively insignificant and tired time working on the game’s animation and controls, but I’m mostly going to be lame and get extra sleep tonight in hopes of staving this thing off.

Terrorist Bears from Hell: Day 3

I’ve rigged and animated the player model, but unfortunately haven’t finished enough movement and animation code to really have much different in-game work to show you. I do feel like my animation code is quite refined compared to what it’s been in my previous games at this point, though, so that’s good.

Actually spent some time thinking about game design, and I’m liking the gameplay idea quite a lot. I’ve been looking for an excuse to mix color matching and violence for some time now.

I had some difficulty deciding between bomb kwon do and rocket kwon do, which is embarrassing. Rocket kwon do is obviously cooler.

Terrorist Bears from Hell: Day 2
Art test complete! Later than I’d like, but at least I’ve nailed down a style here. Today I finished the car, bear, and some prop models, sans animations. I got a bit more playful with the scaling of my exceptionally boxy characters and things seem much improved. I’ll likely be reusing some of Pile of Kittens’s movement and animation blending code, depending on how reusable it actually is.
I watched Under Siege with my wife today. I had apparently only seen Under Siege 2 before. Good stuff.
I’ve gotta pick up the pace. I’m getting some good momentum here, so I remain hopeful that I can pull this off. It was good to have a relatively lazy Sunday, though.

Terrorist Bears from Hell: Day 1

At least I’m happy with the mullet. I can just see it flowing in the wind. I had some rather painful computer issues thanks to my PC deciding it didn’t want to be without a random reboot for any significant amount of time. Data loss, troubleshooting, etc. I’ve moved onto my Mac, but I still lost much of the day. I may grant myself some mercy time a week from now to compensate.

I’m thinkin’ sidescrolling mouse shooter for this. I have a few too many ideas right now. We’ll see how that goes. My ideas are generally tempered by reality once I’ve finished the initial art test.

I made some… unmanly choices in my late night flails for motivation.
