Recipe: Homemade Japanese curry
We had a soup and stew cookoff at our place last night. It went well. Japanese curry is one of my old standbys, but the accepted way of making that dish is to just open a box and go at it. I’ve been altering my own curry a lot compared to the box’s instructions over the years, and when I (finally) found this recipe for a homemade version of the same curry I couldn’t help but...

Pile of Kittens: Day 3
I usually put my dev logs for game dev competitions in more out of the way places, but apparently Pile of Kittens’ is going here! Given that my last screenshot was a mockup of the style I’m using now, things don’t look much different, but I can pick up and throw kittens now, which is exciting and makes for some pretty hilariously named chunks of code.  It’s going to be...

Lantern (contest version) released!
This is more rushed than just about any of my contest releases, but I’m generally pleased with it so far and plan to work on it more this month, possibly for the Ludum Dare October challenge, if I think it’s worth charging for. Download for Windows Download for Mac Black & White Contest dev log

Run Run Robot got 5th place in the Ludum Dare 21 Jam!  Be sure to check out the other entrants, too.  There were a lot of good games.

Run Run Robot
I did art, direction, and a bit of code on a game called Run Run Robot for the latest Ludum Dare Jam, which is a team competition to make a game in 72 hours.  We’re pretty proud of it. Get Run Run Robot on Ludum Dare My Run Run Robot dev blog

Coward Bot's Bad Day →
I was havin’ a pretty lazy day, so I figured I should draw something.  I like the idea of Coward Bot being forced into adventures.  His internal Terminator-style HUD is totally filled with “RUN. RUN. RUN.” next to a looping wireframe simulation of a robot getting crushed by a dragon claw.

Subatomic Kangaroo World Tour
I finished Subatomic Kangaroo World Tour and I’d love to know what you think about it. I finished this for a game dev competition on the 18th, but I’m just now recovering enough to post about it in a moderately intelligent manner. I got the name from everyone’s favorite Video Game Name Generator. The game’s kind of a bullet-hell jumping shooter with slow motion and...

Making Games in Unity: Prefabs and Game Art
This is part 2 of a series.  If you’re entirely new to making games with Unity, then I recommend you read the first article first.  I don’t plan on writing many of these, but I did want to cover reusing game assets through prefabs and 3D asset workflow.  The descriptions of those things I found when learning Unity myself left me confused and misinformed; hopefully I’ll do a bit...

What's it like to make a game in Unity?
There are a lot of different tools out there for making games.  Some are just libraries like Irrlicht, OGRE, or JMonkey.  Others are full on toolkits/IDEs like UDK, Torque, Shiva, or Unity.  All of these generally have the same painful entry fee for a new user: you need to learn them before you can decide whether you’ll like them.  What’s the workflow?   What do scripts look like?...

PixelJunk Shooter 2
The original was excellent and this sequel’s downright magical.  It may be my favorite 2D shooter.  The awesome fluid simulation + lava and water wrangling from the original make a return, along with a surprising amount of fun new tricks.  Hell, there’s even a cool competitive multiplayer component. And the art style!  I’ve been putzing around with 2D polygons forever but these...
